Nestled amidst the lush, dense forests of mountains dozens of kilometres southwest of Guangning County, towering wind turbines, each standing about a hundred meters tall, stand solitary atop hills spanning a 60-square-kilometre area.  In addition to the year-round monsoon winds from the South China Sea, what enables them to connect with each other is a dedicated 5G wind power network that was set up just last year.

This wind power private network, jointly constructed by AsiaInfo and China Broadcast Network, is the world's first wind Power 5G private network with full core networks sunk into local areas. Recently, at the 2024 “Blooming Cup” 5G Application Competition guided by the Ministry of Industry and Information, the case based on the Guangning 5G wind power private network won the first prize in the Energy and Non-ferrous Special Competition (Blooming Cup: currently the highest-specification and largest-scale 5G empowering digital application competition nationwide), establishing itself as a “gold-lettered signboard” in the communication industry and a benchmark case for digital intelligence transformation in the wind power sector!

Global First! Domestic First! The First One in China! Every First Achievement is Never Simple.

In September 2023, the 700MHz band 5G private network project in the Guangning Wind Power Farm in Guangdong Province was officially put into operation, marking the completion of China's first wind farm with full-scene coverage of a 5G private network that meets power security requirements, featuring complementary and isolated public-private networking, and operates on the 700MHz band.

Based on its robust product research and development capabilities and personalized service expertise, AsiaInfo collaborated with China Broadcast Network to develop China's first 700MHz integrated base station tailored for wind power business scenarios for the Guangning Wind Power Farm, complete with a full set of 5G wireless communication hardware and software systems. This system has enabled the Guangning Wind Power Farm to achieve 24h uninterrupted communication and data transmission capabilities, effectively resolving issues such as communication disruptions, difficulties in wind turbine inspections, and ineffective personnel management that were previously caused by the complex mountainous environment and harsh meteorological conditions. The project has also verified the superior coverage and strong transmission efficiency of China Broadcast Network's 700MHz band with actual services.

Furthermore, the project saw the first application of AsiaInfo's self-developed software and hardware decoupling, all-cloud deployment, and 5GC power private core network that supports elastic expansion. By integrating edge intelligence, autonomous network operation and maintenance, secure traffic diversion, and other features with the basic network, it has created technical conditions for drone inspections, robotic operations, vibration monitoring, blade crack analysis, lightning strike warnings, etc. In addition, it has explored a systematic approach integrating 5G private networks for wind power with edge data acquisition, operation and maintenance process control, work safety management, and remote diagnostic troubleshooting, providing new ideas and replicable practical paths for the digital intelligence transformation of the wind power industry.

The smooth and efficient operation of the 5G private network in the wind power farm signifies the maturing of 5G technology applications in the wind power sector, moving from concepts to maturity and from experiments to large-scale commercialization.
