On March 21, Dr. Zhang Yaqin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and president of the Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), Tsinghua University, led a delegation to visit and exchange with AsiaInfo and held the signing and unveiling ceremony of the “Joint Research Center for 6G Networks and Intelligent Computing” of AsiaInfo& Institute for AI Industry Research, Tsinghua University. Gao Nianshu, CEO and Executive Director of AsiaInfo, attended the ceremony, in which Dr. Ouyang Ye, CTO, Senior Vice President, and IEEE Fellow, handled the meeting.
Under the witness of Gao Nianshu and Academician Zhang Yaqin, Professor Liu Yunxin, Chief Researcher of the Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), Tsinghua University, and Dr. Ye Xiaozhou, Chief Scientist of AsiaInfo, signed a cooperation agreement on behalf of both parties on the “Joint Research Center for 6G Networks and Intelligent Computing”. Gao Nianshu and Academician Zhang Yaqin jointly unveiled the joint research center.

The Joint Research Center for 6G Networks and Intelligent Computing is developing towards the cutting-edge of 6th generation mobile communication and artificial intelligence. It will jointly carry out innovative and groundbreaking technical research on 6G networks and intelligent computing, empowering 6G networks, autonomous networks, evolution of communication IT architecture, communication artificial intelligence, big data, privacy computing, federated learning, digital intelligence applications, and other fields with a combination of cross technologies such as mobile communication and intelligent computing, and strengthen the construction of a full stack software infrastructure that supports future 6G communication networks and services that integrate air, space and ground. At the same time, both parties will be committed to creating a large model application for TelcoGPT in the communication industry.

In conference, Professor Liu Yunxin, director of the Joint Research Center, has reviewed the achievements of bilateral cooperation in the past two years, focusing on the research progress in intelligent edge computing, computing network optimization based on reinforcement learning, federated learning and privacy computing. Dr. Ye Xiaozhou, Deputy Director of the Joint Research Center, introduced the main targets and plans for 2023. Both parties have jointly released first White Paper of AIGC (GPT-4) Empowering Telecom Sector in the industry, and will jointly release the first White Paper of 6G OSS Technology and White Paper of 6G BSS Technology with their industry partners.
Academician Zhang Yaqin stated that with the development of basic AI models such as GPT, AI will bring greater changes and opportunities to some vertical industries such as communications. Both parties should accelerate the industrial landing of TelcoGPT and produce new breakthroughs to industrial development as soon as possible.
Gao Nianshu referred that in recent years, AsiaInfo has developed from a “service-oriented” enterprise to a “service oriented enterprise with products”, and now, it has developed into a “service and product oriented” enterprise which has comprehensive capabilities in fields such as IT+CT+OT. AsiaInfo hopes that it can take further steps in enhancing its leading force of technologies and products in fields like communications through continuous cooperation and joint innovation with the Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), Tsinghua University

Joint Research Center for 6G Networks and Intelligent Computing of AsiaInfo & Institute for AI Industry Research, Tsinghua University
AsiaInfo and Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), Tsinghua University have established the “5G Intelligent Joint Research Center” in 2020. Following the development of cutting-edge technology, the new joint research center will be renamed “Joint Research Center for 6G Networks and Intelligent Computing”. Depending on the multi-disciplinary research resources and industry expert resources of Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), Tsinghua University, and rich communication domain knowledge and industry application scenarios of AsiaInfo, the research center is committed to constructing a national AI research center, setting a benchmark in the field of communication artificial intelligence, building innovative algorithm models and setting industry solutions, enhancing the collaboration of “industry, university, and research”, and promoting the establishment of 6G+AI industry standards to produce influential academic achievements, and build a research practice base and cutting-edge technology incubation base for high-end talent cultivation. The Joint Laboratory has reached leading technological level and formed complete solutions in the fields of network intelligence, edge intelligence, reinforcement learning, and federated learning, etc. Both parties have applied for more than 100 domestic and foreign patents in relevant fields, formulated over 40 standards at home and abroad, such as 3GPP, GSMA, ITU, and published more than 50 5G+AI monographs and academic papers, won over 30 awards in international AI competitions, and won the “First Prize of CCF Science and Technology Progress” of the China Computer Federation, as well as the “Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Progress Award” that was the highest award for intelligent science and technology in China. Both parties have jointly hosted the 2022 World Artificial Intelligence Conference on - Intelligent Computing Network and Green Computing Forum, which has achieved good social and economic benefits.
